Excellent writing and really good argument!
This is a fantastic speech script."

All Work and No Play Makes Jill a Dull Girl

Have you ever heard, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”?
It tells us how important it is for us to play.
It is the same with girls.
I would like to say, “All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl”!

Teachers and parents are usually happier when we study longer.
The longer we study, the happier they are.
They think the longer we play, the more foolish we become.
I am afraid we are forgetting how important it is for us to play.

For example, a survey showed that when adults were asked what they should have done more
in their high school days, they answered that they should have spent more time in playing
instead of just studying.  It is the fifth of all their regrets.

I think there are three big merits in playing.
The first merit is that we can refresh ourselves by playing,
and we can tackle our study with a refreshed mind.  It improves our quality of study.
The second merit is that playing makes us emotionally rich.  Looking and learning different things
from school textbooks makes us richer in emotions.
The third merit is that we can experience and learn what playing alone can teach us,
what we cannot learn just by sitting at a desk.

By playing I do not mean playing video games or just taking a nap.
What I mean by playing is, “seeing movies”, “climbing a mountain”, or “going to the seaside”.
When we climb mountains, we find wonderful views and various plants and flowers.
When we reach the top of a mountain, we may get a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.
It may give us confidence in ourselves.  When we go to the seaside, just looking at the vast sea
may help us forget trifles.  We may realize what is most important for us in our life.

When we have too much homework, and studying has become just a labor,
we must be careful.  We should be careful not to become “dull boys and girls.

                             How I Would Advertise Japan

Why is it necessary to advertise Japan?  In order to promote international trade, it is necessary
to keep peaceful relations with other countries.  In order to keep peaceful relations with other countries,
it is necessary to have them trust the Japanese.  To have them trust the Japanese, it is necessary
to advertise the good points of the Japanese.

What are the good points of the Japanese?  Japanese people are generally polite, kind, keep promises,
hardworking and don’t take advantage of other people’s weaknesses.  Then, how can we advertise such
good points?  I believe one of the best ways is to send young people who have such good qualities to
other countries.  We should send at least 100 high school students to other countries, and those students
should spend at least one year in a foreign country.  In every prefecture, two or three top students could
be chosen to study abroad.

However, there are two big problems that must be overcome; the cost and the college entrance
examination.  As for the cost, it is polite for the person who receives the most benefit should pay.
In this case, it is the government that gets the greatest benefit.  Even if it costs five million yen to
send one student to a foreign country for a year, it will cost only five hundred million yen to send
100 students.  Please remember how much money the government must pay to buy just one  fighter jet.
It costs dozens of times more.  Which is a wiser policy?

When a high school student studies abroad for a year, he or she cannot prepare for a college entrance
examination that year, and after coming home will likely have to spend one year longer at high school.
This is a great handicap, and most students would not choose this course.  So they should be given special
privilege in regards to entrance examination.

There are many attractive points in Japan such as the natural beauty of its mountains and rivers,
delicious food of various districts, traditional kimono made of silk, and arts and crafts.  TV programs
featuring such attractions can be carried on DVDs.  The students should take a DVD projector with them.
They will be very helpful at a presentation, and those DVDs and projector should be given to the local
school or the library when the student leaves the town.  The Japanese government can easily cover the cost.

Advertisement should not be one-sided.  We should learn the good points of other countries, too.
When a student spends one year in a town in a foreign country, he will discover the good points of that
country, too.  When people learn about the good points of other people, they have mutual trust.

When people have mutual trust, it is easier to avoid a war as a means of settling international disputes.
That’s why I believe we should send young people to other countries to advertise Japan.

(ALTの先生のコメント:Kazu, this is one of the best essays I have ever read in my 3 years of Ichiritsu! Great Job!)
