Mr. Bob Brimson(manager) said listening to the Dark Therapy E.P. would be a pointer to what we could expect for the third album, does this mean it will be more mellow than 'Everyone's Got One' and 'On'? And when will we get to hear some new material?
We are currently writing the third album and talking to prospective producers. I have no idea how it's going to turn out, but I doubt that it will be that mellow.
What are your touring plans for the next 12 months?
We spent the summer playing festivals in the U.K. and Europe. We might do some Christmas shows. We have been offered some dates in Chile and Argentina and Thailand/Singapore which we are considering for November. If we play Thailand we might stop of in Japan too. There will be no major touring until after the album is released.
How important is the US market in regards to Echobelly's success? It seems that Echobelly has been working harder than other U.K. bands.
We have been to the States on tour 3 times now and have plans to go back in 1997. We have always been a "live" band and the U.S.A. is as important as anywhere else. We've met some brilliant people there who always come to see us play.
How important do you think the Internet is to spreading your popularity?
To tell you the truth, I've never used the Internet(shock horror!). I don't even have computer. If there's anyone who wants to teach me, get in touch!
As an avid fan, EGO was the most intriguing album to date, you approached many different angles of personal anger, political 'views', and cultural 'views'. Do you think that now you have come to grips with these 'views', and if so will you be approaching more of these 'views' in your next album??
Answering questions like this makes me feel like some reluctant politician. I write about what interests me at the time and usually move on up/down from there.
Sonya, there are many Indians out there who look up to you as being an inspiration to those who are trying to break the boundaries of typical Indian beliefs. Do you have any advice to them? Also do you have any regretsin your life on what you have accomplished and the road you took to get there??
I'm flattered that anyone, whatever their background can find me an inspiration. I'm not really into "advising" anyone other than encouraging people to find their own path.
What do you think of American rock music today? Do you have any favorite American bands? What do you think of Belly and Juliana Hatfield (if you've heard of them)?
I think that it is generally a little difficult for British bands to really appreciate what's going on in the states (musically) right now.
How do you feel about the reunion of the Sex Pistols? Isn't it a good idea to play "In The Year" at Phoenix festival?
It's always a bit "sad" to see nostalgia regurgitated. The first time is the best time.
Some music writers say that your lyrics are "too far left" for the American public, do you think that's an accurate assessment of your music?
If I worried about what music writers say, I'd never have written 90% of echobelly lyrics! Opinions are like arseholes everyone's got one.
Do you think Oasis is responsible for opening the door for other UK bands in the US or do you think that is just a bunch of bollocks?
I think Oasis write very pleasant unchallenging music which could open the doors for other British pleasant and unchallenging bands.
Do you think your songwriting would gain something with more input from Debbie, Andy and James?
No. Songwriting is a very personal thing for me, I think I might lose something by allowing "shared" impact.
Where do you get the inspiration from to write your songs?
I'm not really sure myself. I think it's a state of mind.
Is there any musician that you would be happy to do a cover of any of your songs?
I'd be curious to hear anyones' interpretation.
As a band or even as individuals in society, what goals do you have in the sceme of the world? Are you trying to stir up the thoughts of young minds, or are you here to do your thing and make music, and release your feelings?
If there are any goals, I'd say they lie somewhere between fulfilment and fine memories. We are here to do our thing.....
Looking at your tour schedule over the past few months, it's clear you've been busy, were you enjoying the tour? Do you have any funny stories?
It's now July and we are festival hopping once a week, we've played festivals in Prague, Lisbon, Denmark, Spain and the Phoenix Festival on the 21st of July which will be broadcast on the internet.
Sonya, it seems that you have many admirers,is it ever embarrassing? (like belows)
It's always flattering.
What's it like being the most beautiful woman in music!?
See what I mean!!!!
I want to know the birthdays of the Echobelly guys but all I could find was that Sonya was Pisces.
Glenn, Debbie and Andy are Leos'. James is a Virgo.
This is a typical question: What musical influences do you all have roots to and if anyone, who do you look up to as a band, and as an individual?
I HATE this question. Cliche, Cliche, Cliche. Sorry.
Has anyone in the band been getting really excited about Euro '96?
We all got upset when Germany won on penalties against England!!!!!!!
Debbie and Glenn, What kind of guitars do you prefer?
Vintage! Especially Gibsons.
To Debbie Smith : Do you hear from fans of The Curve ever?
They tend to be old Goths. We bump into a few occasionally.
James: Is there some sort of pressure put upon you to do better than Alex Keyser?
James is infinitely better than Alex. There are no competition.
You keep my feet on the ground and my head in the clouds, thank you.
